I would highly recommend Oxford Brain and Mind to any person seeking help with any psychiatric issue and assessments for autism. I tried my luck in contacting the clinic on 2 Jan (a day after the new year / public holidays when most clinics were closed). I was desperate to get help for someone I love for anxiety/depression-related issues. Sanjay was very responsive and understanding, securing a slot for us to see Dr Malhotra quickly. Dr Malhotra was thorough in her assessment and diagnosis, offering an effective treatment plan. The plan works perfectly well for us. The plan included CBT with Wendy who is very helpful in imparting important skills. The plan also included an assessment for autism. Dr Malhotra and Sanjay are both professional and kind in their approach and in conducting the lengthy assessments. We appreciate their help very much.

I saw Dr Saïk de La Motte de Broöns de Vauvert for an assessment. It was very comprehensive and considered many complicating factors. Overall very positive and following assessment I felt my concerns were well looked after and that the doctor offered to go to lengths to secure a prescription. The location is very clean and nicely decorated too.

I am so grateful for Dr Malhotra’s kindness and compassion, which is sadly not something I have often experienced in my mental healthcare. I really felt heard and respected. I am also impressed by her insight into my very complex, decades long mental illness. In just two long sessions she was able to offer me a new perspective on my condition and to make sense of many things. She provided me with comprehensive diagnostic assessment that will be so helpful going forward. I also now feel better equipped to make decisions about my future treatment.
Thanks also to Sanjay at Oxford Brain and Mind for dealing so efficiently and sensitively with the administrative side of things.

Absolutely fantastic experience! I recently had an ADHD assessment at this clinic, and I couldn’t be happier with how it went. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and at ease. The staff were friendly, professional, and really took the time to understand my concerns.

The assessment itself was thorough but felt relaxed – the clinician made sure I understood each step and answered all my questions. I never felt rushed, and they genuinely listened to everything I had to say, which was such a relief. By the end, I felt like I finally had some clarity and a clear plan for what to do next.

The whole process was smooth, and booking was a breeze too. If you’re considering an ADHD assessment or any kind of support, I highly recommend this clinic. They really know their stuff and made what could have been a stressful experience into a very positive one.

Understanding How Your Child Thinks and Learns

Every child learns differently, and sometimes it helps to understand exactly how: where their strengths lie, where they find things harder, and whether a pattern of difficulty with reading, memory, attention or problem-solving has an underlying explanation. A cognitive assessment gives a structured, objective picture of a child’s thinking skills, rather than relying on impressions from school or home alone.

We use the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC), the most widely used and researched measure of children’s cognitive ability, administered in a short-form version chosen with time constraints and a child’s concentration and fatigue in mind. It looks at verbal reasoning, visual-spatial skills, working memory and processing speed, producing a profile rather than a single score.

A cognitive assessment on its own does not diagnose a condition. It is often requested alongside an ADHD or autism assessment, where understanding a child’s cognitive profile helps make sense of their difficulties, or on its own where parents or a school want clarity on a child’s learning strengths and needs. If you are unsure whether this is the right assessment for your child, get in touch and we will talk it through with you.

Why choose Oxford Brain and Mind?

The assessment is administered and interpreted by Dr Kate Green, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist, so the results are read in context rather than reduced to a number. A score means little on its own; what matters is what it tells us about how a child learns day to day, and what that means for support at home and at school.

Because Oxford Brain and Mind also offers ADHD and autism assessment for children, a cognitive assessment carried out here can sit alongside those pathways where it is helpful, with the same team seeing the whole picture rather than results being interpreted in isolation by a separate provider.

You receive a clear written report explaining what the assessment found, in plain language as well as clinical detail, with practical recommendations for school and home. With your permission, we are happy to share this with your child’s school, GP or any other professional involved in their care.

How it works

What the Assessment Involves

The assessment is a single structured session, built around standard psychometric practice.

Initial Enquiry

You can contact us directly; no GP or school referral is needed, though we are happy to work from one if a school or GP has suggested this assessment.

Background Information

Before the session we ask for some background: any relevant school reports, previous assessments, and the specific questions you would like the assessment to help answer.

The WISC Session

Dr Green administers the WISC (short-form) with your child individually. It is untimed pressure aside from the built-in subtests, conversational in style, and most children find it more like a series of puzzles and games than a test.

Scoring and Interpretation

Results are scored against age-matched norms and interpreted alongside the background information, so the profile reflects your child specifically rather than a number in isolation.

Written Report

You receive a clear report covering the cognitive profile, what it means in practical terms, and recommendations for school and home, written so that it is useful to parents as well as professionals.

Feedback Session

Dr Green talks you through the results in person, answers your questions, and helps you think through what the findings mean for supporting your child going forward.

Part of a Wider Picture

Cognitive Assessment Alongside ADHD or Autism

Cognitive assessment is often most useful as part of a wider picture. Where a child is also being assessed for ADHD or autism, a WISC assessment can help explain why certain difficulties show up at school, and whether they stem from attention, learning profile, or both.

See our Children’s ADHD Assessments and Child Autism Assessments pages, both of which can include a WISC assessment as one part of a combined pathway.

Common Questions

FAQ: Children’s Cognitive Assessment

The WISC is designed for children and young people aged 6 to 16. For younger children or adults, different age-appropriate measures are used; contact us if you are unsure which applies to your child.

No. You can contact us directly to arrange an assessment. We are also happy to accept a referral or suggestion from your child’s school or GP.

No, a cognitive assessment on its own does not diagnose a condition such as ADHD, autism or a specific learning difficulty. It describes how your child thinks and learns, which can support a diagnosis made elsewhere or stand alone as useful information for school.

The report is written by a HCPC-registered Consultant Clinical Psychologist using a recognised standardised measure, and is suitable for sharing with schools, SENCOs and other professionals with your consent.

The assessment session itself is chosen as a shorter-form version with your child’s concentration in mind. We will confirm timescales for the appointment and the written report when you get in touch.
