Thanks also to Sanjay at Oxford Brain and Mind for dealing so efficiently and sensitively with the administrative side of things.
The assessment itself was thorough but felt relaxed – the clinician made sure I understood each step and answered all my questions. I never felt rushed, and they genuinely listened to everything I had to say, which was such a relief. By the end, I felt like I finally had some clarity and a clear plan for what to do next.
The whole process was smooth, and booking was a breeze too. If you’re considering an ADHD assessment or any kind of support, I highly recommend this clinic. They really know their stuff and made what could have been a stressful experience into a very positive one.
Why to choose Oxford Brain and Mind:
At Oxford Brain and Mind, we pride ourselves in being a consultant led service. Our consultant psychiatrists have extensive experience, also work in the NHS and follow evidence-based assessment and management guidance. The Consultant will be able to complete assessment and initiate treatment in the first appointment (if appropriate) after a thorough discussion with you. At Oxford Brain and Mind, we do not put you on waiting list for assessment or treatment. We can offer appointment to you usually within 2-3 weeks of referral.
Consulting a Psychiatrist at Oxford Brain and Mind for ADHD medication if you already have a diagnosis of ADHD
Why a consultation with Psychiatrist is needed
If you have received a diagnosis of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) from another provider, such us by a psychologist, nurse, educational service, or other non-psychiatric provider, you may be advised to consult a psychiatrist before starting medication. You may also contact us to initiate medication if your assessor has a long wait time to start medication.
Many ADHD medications are controlled prescription drugs that can only be initiated by a medical specialist with prescribing authority. Psychiatrists are the professionals legally permitted to assess medication suitability and initiate treatment. There are other professionals too who can initiate medication for ADHD but psychiatrists have the most extensive training to manage ADHD as well as any other comorbid psychiatric condition.
What will the Psychiatrist do
A psychiatrist does not usually repeat the entire diagnostic assessment for ADHD, but instead focuses on medication-related considerations. This is called a secondary assessment to confirm your diagnosis. This may include:
- Reviewing your ADHD diagnostic report and history
- Confirming that medication is appropriate for you
- Assessing physical and mental health factors relevant to medication safety
- Screening for conditions that may affect medication choice (e.g., anxiety, mood disorders, heart conditions, substance misuse)
- Discussing medication options, benefits, and possible side effects
- Prescribing medication and planning follow-up care
Why Medication Requires Specialist Oversight
ADHD medications—particularly stimulant medications—require careful monitoring because they:
- Affect the central nervous system
- May interact with other medications
- Can have side effects that need medical supervision
- Often require dose titration and follow-up adjustments
A psychiatrist ensures that treatment is safe, effective, and tailored to your individual needs.
Review and Initiating Medication for ADHD at Oxford Brain and Mind
To help the process go smoothly, please send:
- Your ADHD diagnostic report and assessment results
- Any previous mental health evaluations
- A list of current medications and supplements
- Relevant medical history (e.g., heart conditions, sleep issues)
- Questions or concerns about medication
These will be reviewed by the consultant psychiatrist to organise an appropriate length of appointment for you.
What Happens After Medication Is Started
After initiating medication, the psychiatrist will:
- Monitor your response and side effects
- Adjust dosage if needed
- Decide whether ongoing prescribing can be transferred to another provider (such as a primary care doctor for shared care), depending on your GP’s policy of taking shared care
Important to Know
- Seeking a psychiatrist consultation does not mean your diagnosis is being questioned
- Medication is optional and should be a shared decision
- Non-medication treatments (e.g., therapy, coaching, accommodations) can continue alongside or instead of medication
- In most cases the psychiatrist will agree with the diagnosis made elsewhere if the assessment has been thorough and according to NICE approved standards. However, in a very limited cases the psychiatrist may inform you that the diagnosis is not appropriate and your condition could be explained by other mental health conditions.
- You will be offered an opportunity to discuss treatment options.
If You Have Concerns
If you feel unsure or anxious about seeing a psychiatrist or starting medication, discuss this openly. You are entitled to clear explanations, informed consent, and involvement in all treatment decisions.
