Psychotherapy and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidence based psychotherapeutic treatment. It helps individuals to identify and learn about thoughts and actions that have a negative influence on their behaviour and emotion. In a CBT treatment programme, a cognitive behaviour therapist tries to
empower individuals identify their maladaptive way of thinking and then restructure and replace with more objective, realistic and positive thoughts and behaviour. CBT is a collaborative therapy process where the therapist work closely with an individual towards a mutually agreed goal. CBT practitioners at Oxford Brain and Mind are highly experienced and accredited with professional bodies such as the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). Dr Economou is a medical psychotherapist, who is also a consultant psychiatrist with expertise in psychotherapy. Dr Economou has extensive experience of working with adults and adolescents, who are going through a difficult time in life and experiencing struggles on an emotional level, as well as working with people who are suffering with an episode of mental illness. He has experience of providing detailed, complex assessments and treatment across the diagnostic spectrum.

Dr Economou works with people suffering with a wide range of issues and with mental illness across diagnostic categories. He has particular expertise in working with people who suffer enduring mood symptoms, which do not easily fit into diagnostic categories and may be linked with chronic trauma and or wider emotional difficulties.  In recent years, he has developed considerable expertise in working with patients suffering medically unexplained symptoms.

Dr Economou’s approach is to work towards understanding you as a whole person and working with you towards a formulation, and potentially a diagnosis, which makes sense for you as a person. In his psychotherapeutic approach, Dr Economou is influenced by psychoanalytic, psychodynamic, cognitive and systemic approaches. He has additional training in mentalisation based therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, psychodynamic interpersonal therapy, as well as group approaches. He works with individuals, offering brief as well as long-term therapies.
